User Preferences

User settings control how Fencer shows information to you and which notifications reach you. Your profile and display settings apply across every organization you belong to. Your notifications are set per organization, as personal notification rules.

Open user settings by clicking your avatar and selecting User settings. The sidebar has these pages:

  • Profile — your name, job title, time zone, profile picture, date display, celebrations, and marketing email.
  • Account — your email addresses, the organizations you belong to, and account deletion.
  • Security and API keys — password, two-factor authentication, active sessions, connected sign-in accounts, and personal API keys. See SSO and Authentication.
  • Notifications — your personal notification rules for the organization you have open.

Personal notification rules decide what reaches you. Organization rules, managed by admins under Settings > Notifications, send events to shared channels and people. See Notifications and Alerts.

  1. Click your avatar, select User settings, and open Profile.
  2. Under Identity, update any of these fields, then click Save Changes:
    • Full name and What should we call you? — how you appear to teammates.
    • Job title — your role within your organization.
    • Time zone — used for displaying timestamps.
  3. Under Profile picture, drop an image or click the avatar to upload one (PNG, JPEG, or WebP, at least 400×400px).

These settings save as soon as you change them:

  • Date display — set Date format to Relative (“7 days ago”) or Timestamp (the exact date and time). The other format appears on hover.
  • Celebrations — Show celebrations turns the milestone animations on or off.
  • Marketing communications — Send me product updates opts you in or out of marketing email.
  1. Open Account in user settings.
  2. Under Email addresses, add an address, then verify it with the code Fencer sends you.
  3. Use Make primary to choose the address Fencer uses for your account, or Remove to delete an address you no longer use.

Leaving an organization or deleting your account

Section titled “Leaving an organization or deleting your account”
  1. Open Account in user settings.
  2. Under Organization memberships, click Leave next to an organization and confirm.
  3. To delete your account, click Delete Account under Danger zone, type your email address to confirm, optionally give a reason, and click Delete my account. You must first leave every organization that has other members; organizations where you are the only member are deleted with your account.
  1. Open Notifications in user settings. The page lists your personal rules for the organization you have open. To change another organization’s rules, open that organization first.
  2. Edit a rule, or click New rule to add one from a template, a plain-English description, or from scratch.
  3. Turn on Notify me in my in-app inbox, Send me an email, or Send me a DM on Slack. Slack DMs need the organization to have Slack connected.
  4. On triggers about a person, such as Task assigned or comments, keep Only when it involves me on to hear only about your own items.
  5. Click Save rule. Use a rule’s toggle to pause it, or its menu to delete it.

When you join an organization, Fencer creates default rules for the events your role receives. See Notifications and Alerts for what they include.

Only critical vulnerabilities and your own tasks

  1. Open Notifications in user settings.
  2. Keep your Important Vulnerability Detected rule at Critical severity and turn on Send me an email.
  3. Keep your Task Assigned rule’s Send me a DM on Slack and Only when it involves me on.
  4. Pause the other rules.

High-severity vulnerabilities too

Edit your Important Vulnerability Detected rule and add High to its Severity condition.

  • “Notifications are set per organization” — Open one of your organizations, then return to Notifications.
  • “Personal notification rules are not available for your role” — Penetration Tester and custom roles cannot manage personal rules.
  • Not receiving email — Check that your rule has Send me an email on and that your email address is verified.
  • Slack DMs not arriving — The organization needs a connected Slack workspace, and your Slack account email must match your Fencer email.
