Search and Advanced Filters

Fencer provides two complementary ways to find information: a unified search that queries across every major entity type at once, and advanced filters available on list pages such as Vulnerabilities, Detections, Identities, and Team. Together they let you quickly locate specific items and build reusable filter views for recurring workflows.

The platform-wide search page accepts a free-text query (minimum 2 characters) and returns results grouped by entity type. Behind the scenes, each entity type is searched independently, so a partial failure in one category does not block results from the others. You only see the categories your role can read: for example, Detections needs access to security detections and Integrations needs access to integrations.

Searchable entity types include:

  • Vulnerabilities — matches on title, description, and slug
  • Code — matches on repository name or URI
  • Secrets — matches on title, description, and slug
  • Dependencies — matches on package name, file path, asset name, and slug
  • Artifacts — matches on artifact name or URI
  • Domains — matches on domain name or URI
  • Applications — matches on application name or URI
  • Endpoints — matches on endpoint name or URI
  • Infrastructure — matches on cloud account name or URI
  • Detections — matches on title, description, and slug
  • Identities — matches on display name, primary email, and slug
  • Integrations — matches on integration name
  • Scans — matches on associated asset name and slug

Each category returns up to 5 results by default. You can narrow results to a single type using the type selector, which raises the limit to 50. Every result includes a direct link to the detail page.

List pages use a declarative filter system that lets you build structured queries with multiple conditions. Each filter condition consists of three parts:

  1. Field — the attribute you want to filter on (e.g., severity, status, assignee)
  2. Operator — how to compare (e.g., is, is not, contains, is before)
  3. Value(s) — one or more values to match against

Available operators depend on the field type:

Field typeOperators
Enum / selectis, is not
Textcontains, does not contain
Dateis, is before, is after, is between
Booleanis

You can combine multiple filter conditions using the top-level operator Match All (AND) or Match Any (OR) to control how conditions are joined.

  1. Click the search icon in the sidebar header (hover it to see its keyboard shortcut).
  2. Type at least 2 characters into the search field.
  3. Review results grouped by entity type. Click any result to navigate to its detail page, or View more in a category to see more of its results.
  4. To focus on a single entity type, select the desired type from the type filter dropdown (All shows every type). This increases the result limit and hides other categories.
  1. On any list page that supports advanced filters (e.g., Vulnerabilities, Detections, Identities), click the Filter button to open the filter menu.
  2. Select a field from the filter catalog. Available fields vary by page — for example, the Vulnerabilities page offers Severity, Priority, Status, Category, Asset, Assignee, Location (file path, URL, domain, or resource identifier, depending on the vulnerability), SLA status, Fencer triage, and more.
  3. Choose an operator (e.g., is, is not).
  4. Select one or more values. For enum fields you pick from a predefined list; for text fields you type a value; for date fields you pick a date or date range.
  5. Add additional filter conditions as needed.
  6. Once two or more conditions are applied, click the operator button to toggle between Match All and Match Any to control how conditions combine.
  7. Click Clear to remove every filter.

Fencer remembers the filters you last used on a page and restores them the next time you open it.

Most list pages support column-based sorting. Click a column header to sort ascending; click again to sort descending. Default sort orders are pre-configured per page — for example, vulnerabilities default to severity then priority.

You can save your current filter configuration as a named preset for quick reuse:

  1. Configure your desired filters, operator, or display options. Free-text searches are not saved in presets.
  2. Click Save in the filter bar, enter a Preset name, and click Save.
  3. The preset is stored in your browser and appears in the Presets bar above the filters on subsequent visits.
  4. To apply a saved preset, click it in the Presets bar. An active preset is highlighted when the current filters match a saved configuration.
  5. To update an existing preset, adjust the filters and save with the same name — it will overwrite the previous version.
  6. To delete a preset, click the × (Remove preset) next to it.

In addition to advanced filters, most list pages include a quick-search text field that performs an inline search. For vulnerabilities this searches across title, slug, and asset name. For dependencies it searches package name, version, path, asset name, and license. The behavior varies by page but generally covers the most commonly searched fields.

On data grid pages, open Display to choose which Columns are shown and the row Density. To download the current view — with its filters, sort, and search applied — open Export below the grid and choose Export CSV or Export JSON.

Find all critical vulnerabilities assigned to you:

  1. Navigate to the Vulnerabilities page.
  2. Open advanced filters and add a condition: Severity is Critical.
  3. Add a second condition: Assignee is your name.
  4. Ensure the top-level operator is set to Match All.

Search for a specific secret across the platform:

  1. Open unified search from the search icon in the sidebar header.
  2. Type the name or description fragment of the secret (e.g., “Stripe API key”).
  3. If there are many results, select the Secrets type filter to see up to 50 matches.

Save a reusable filter for unresolved high-priority items:

  1. On the Vulnerabilities page, add filters for Severity is High, Status is Open, and Priority is Urgent.
  2. Set the operator to Match All.
  3. Click Save and name the preset “Urgent open vulns”.
  4. Next time you visit, click the preset in the Presets bar to instantly apply the same filters.
  • Search returns no results — Ensure your query is at least 2 characters long. The search page shows Keep typing if the query is too short.
  • A search category shows an error — If one entity type fails, results from other types still appear, and a notice says “Some sources could not be searched” and names them. Try again or narrow your search to a specific type.
  • A category is missing from the results — Search only covers the types your role can read.
  • Filters do not seem to apply — Verify the top-level operator (Match All vs Match Any) is set correctly. With Match Any, results matching any single condition are included.
  • Saved presets are missing — Presets are stored in browser local storage. Clearing browser data or switching to a different browser will reset them.
